AotM – September 2014

September 2014: The Triple Threat

A heavy barbell….gymnastics….or some long cardio sessions, no fear, Missi’s got you covered!

miss AOTMMeet Missi!

Tell us about yourself (name, age, education, family, work, etc.)

Well…. My name is Melissa Moyer, but I go by Missi. I am 26 years old and I graduated from EMU just a few years ago with my degree in Psychology. I am from the great state of Pennsylvania and becoming a Virginia resident as well as living below the Mason Dixon line has been a hard transition for me (it took me 3 years to change my license plate). I will be forever an EAGLES fan and a Northerner. 🙂 I currently work at the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Community Service Board as an Intellectual Disabilites Support Coordinator serving adults who have disabilites.

How long have you been doing crossfit?

I believe that I started Crossfit at 6:45 am opening day. The Rock was opening in January and I am a February Birthday, I convinced myself that 25 was going to be the start of my prime years…so I had to step it up a notch. I gave up step, Combat, Running, Zumba and Spinning for something that was a little more involved. I was one of the first people signed up at Gold’s for the new Rocktown Crossfit. I had decided to join the “cult.”

When/what was your “crossfit moment” or have you had one? (the one where you think you may actually die)

I feel as if I am going to die 90% of the time, but for some reason I just keep pushing through. (probably because I ate french fries the night before) Thinking back on the most painful experience thus far…I would say the final workout at Superfit Charlottesville was probably my “crossfit moment.” I randomly signed up for the competition and somehow made it to the final workout. The workout consisted of a 800 meter run then a ladder of pullups, goblet squats and snatches. I did my pull-ups 1 by 1 and with each one I wanted to give up and cry. I have never been so close to crying from exercise in my entire life. I had just started doing kipping pull-ups and that workout killed every inch of confidence that I had gained.

What are your favorite crossfit movements?

This is a hard question. I love crossfit holistically but I’m not sure that I have any favorite movement. Every movement has its own set of challenges, and no matter how well you do it there’s always room to push it harder. I guess some of the things I’m least alarmed of when I see them on the board are squats, runs and pull ups.

What movement makes you look at the white board and want to walk back out the door?

I love hand stand push-ups, double unders and box jump overs. I am terrified of a regular handstand and when i first started Crossfit I didn’t foresee a handstand push-up ever happening in my Crossfit career. Shortly after my first attempt at a handstand push-up I fell in love. To this day I think that I have only missed HSPU in a workout due to vacation. Double unders took me a good 6 months to achieve but now I look forward to the jumping and I can no longer do a single jump. Box jump overs are just fun!

What are your goals?

Toes to Bar, Toes to Bar, Toes to Bar! I am incredibly excited for the day when I complete a workout doing toes to bar instead of knee tucks! I might shed happy tears.

What motivates you to continue coming back?

I love the way I feel! I am currently at my “fat college girl” weight, but am wearing 2-3 sizes smaller! Funny how that works. I love the people, the relationships formed, the fact that I walk in to the gym and I am told what to do, the progress made, the results I see, the challenges, the competition, the positive attitudes, the diversity in ages and careers, the coaches, the motivation, the hospitality and most of all the FUN. I absolutely love it!

What’s your favorite cheat meal?

Hands down….PIZZA & BEER & ICE CREAM

In your own words what is Rocktown Crossfit?

I moved from Pennsylvania three years ago and it was hard transition for me. Since finding an awesome Church and an awesome Gym my mindset has changed completely! Not only has the Rock served as an amazing place to workout, but it also served as a dating service! Withhout the Rock I wouldn’t have met THE BEST BOYFRIEND EVER (Brian Ratliff)! 🙂 So the 85$ a month was well worth it! I absolutely love everything about Rocktown and I feel incredibly blessed to be part of something so challenging and rewarding. Rocktown Crossfit is an amazing place filled with so much positive energy, supportive coaching and great athletes. Nate and Lauren have poured their hearts and souls into this place and it is visible. They are amazing at what they do and they have found their calling! I love watching the Rock grow! The coaches are incredible and always supportive! I look forward to exercising at the Rock each and every day and I honestly can’t imagine my life without it! I never thought that I would lift more than a 15lb weight while doing lunges, but now I am able to throw 120 lbs over my head while keeping a smile on my face. I was that girl who didnt want to “bulk up.” 🙂

A Note from the Rocktown Staff:

Melissa Moyer…what a journey it has been!  Lauren and I can remember you going through PEAK…and those cleans were so bad we had talked about you going through PEAK again 🙂  Luckily, you passed and the rest is history.  Missi is a breath of fresh air no matter what time of the day you catch her.  She has made us all aware that she is not a morning person, but even at 5:45am she has a smile on her face (it may be a sarcastic one but I count it as a smile no less!).  To call her a go-getter is probably an understatement, if there is a movement or skill that Missi struggles with it won’t be for long…her dedication to be good at everything is relentless.  First it was Handstand Pushups, then came the double unders, followed by the pullups and now for toes to bar!  Her continued dedication to the process has made her one of the most well rounded athletes that walks through our doors; she may not be the strongest or the most gymnasty but because of how efficient she is at all threw facets of CrossFit (weightlifting/gymnastics/cardio) is what makes her so effective…throw in her mental toughness/competitive spirit and you have yourself a great athlete.  It has also been a pleasure to see her relationship with Brian continue to grow, they are two of the most genuine people I know and couldn’t be happier they have found each other.  It also pleases me when Missi tops him in a workout…that smile is bigger than a 5yr old on Christmas morning 🙂  What some of you may not know is Missi is very involved in our community…she is always looking for ways to help and since she has been at Rocktown has been on several mission trips to help those in need…she is what Lauren refers to as “good people”.  Last but not least, before Missi leaves, she always says Thank You to whoever her coach was for that day…not that we would ever expect her or anyone else to do that but its the Random Acts of Kindness that make her a special person.  Congratulations Melissa, well deserved!
