April 2015 Athlete of the Month

April 2015: Consistency Queen

You many never realize she’s there, but she’s working…harder than ever

maggieMeet Maggie!

Tell us about yourself (name, age, education, family, work, etc.)

My name is Maggie Melkus and I am 21 years old. I am senior at James Madison University studying Marketing. After I graduate I will be heading home to Northern Virginia to hopefully finish up the job search process and finally enter this “real world” everyone talks about 🙂

How long have you been doing crossfit?

I have been doing crossfit for about a year and a half now!

When/what was your “crossfit moment” or have you had one? (the one where you think you may actually die)

I have had more crossfit moments than I would like to admit. I think I tend to block them from my memory. The most recent “I might die moment” happened to me during the “Hotshots 19” workout on Labor Day this year.

What are your favorite crossfit movements?

I love power cleans, back squats, and jerks.

What movement makes you look at the white board and want to walk back out the door?

I absolutely cannot stand long runs, thrusters, or hang snatches

What are your goals?

My main goal is to push myself to be the best I can be in every workout. Right now some of my smaller goals are being able to do handstand pushups in a workout and mastering toes to bar. Left leg pistols baffle me. I can do them on the right no problem; the left leg is a different story.

What motivates you to continue coming back?

The number one reason I will always return to the Rock will be the people. Rocktown is a gym like no other. Every single person is so supportive of one another. It is hard not to smile when you walk through the door!

What’s your favorite cheat meal?

Belgian beer and french fries. I’m pretty sure I could eat french fries for the rest of my life and be happy (not healthy at all but very happy) 🙂

In your own words what is Rocktown Crossfit?

Rocktown is an amazing community. The people at the Rock are inspiring and encouraging without fail every day. It is a place to learn, excel, and achieve any goal you set your mind to.

The Rock is my escape for the day. When I come to the gym I can forget about everything else. It is the one hour per day I get to see some great people and focus on myself! I am so happy that I decided to walk through those doors my junior year. I have found a place where I am constantly encouraged and motivated to reach my full potential. The Rock has given me back my competitive drive that I loved so much when I played sports in high school. I can’t thank the coaches enough for everything they do. I smile when I hear Lauren calling my name telling me to put more weight on the bar. Thank you to everyone at the Rock for giving me a second home. It is going to be hard to find a gym that comes even the slightest bit close to the Rock. I couldn’t be happier to be a part of the Rocktown family.

A Note from the Rocktown Staff:

Love this girl.  We have been very blessed with the students who have made The Rock their home away from home and having Maggie is no different.  Its rare to find someone who can balance a college social life, their studies and their fitness but she does it with flying colors.  Maggie is the definition of letting her work do the noise…often times you would forget that she’s in class she is so quiet but she is an absolute force to be reckoned with.  In the last 3 months Lauren and I have both notice it has “clicked” with Maggie, she has been putting up great numbers, getting stronger with a smaller body.  If you have had the opportunity to squat with Mags there’s no doubt you’ve seen this first hand…flawless technique with a house on her back.  Congratulation Maggie…one more feather in the cap before you leave JMU.  You will be greatly missed and there’s no doubt you will find success in whatever you take on next!
