August Athlete of the Month: Katie Goebel

August 2013: The Gazelle

Running, FloRida and fresh Nanos, what more could a girl ask for?  Meet Katie!

Tell us about yourself (name, age, education, family, work, etc.)

My name is Katie Goebel. I’m 28 years old and live in Staunton with my husband, Max.  I’m a CPA at a public accounting firm.  I got my undergrad at Virginia Tech and my masters at JMU.

How long have you been doing crossfit?

I tried it a couple of times in 2012, but didn’t start crossfitting on a regular basis until the Rock opened in January 2013.

When/what was your “crossfit moment” or have you had one? (the one where you think you may actually die)

I would have to say that my first “crossfit moment” was Renee’s Athlete of the Month workout.  My poor legs were shaking uncontrollably and I’m pretty sure I blacked out at some point. I never hated thrusters as much as I did in that moment!

What are your favorite crossfit movements?

A few months ago I would have said running.  I was a runner before crossfit so any workout with running I knew I had an advantage.  But now I really enjoy box jumps and I know ya’ll will think I’m crazy, but…I also like barbell burpees 🙂

What movement makes you look at the white board and want to walk back out the door?

Ugh…double unders and pistols. Especially workouts that have both. But I do believe I’ve come a long way with both of these. I just need to practice them more.

What are your goals?

To be good at everything and not great at one thing. Duh! I have a lot of goals – Rx handstand pushups in a workout, more than 3 strict pullups, improving my snatch technique and increasing the weight, participating in more competitions…just to name a few.

What motivates you to continue coming back?

There is ALWAYS something to improve! Seeing results and PR’s leaves me wanting more. And of course, spending time with this awesome group of people everyday.

What’s your favorite cheat meal?

Anything with peanut butter! Chocolate peanut butter, peanut butter cupcakes, peanut butter ice cream.  I’m kind of an addict and I’m sure I would eat it even if I was allergic.

In your own words what is Rocktown Crossfit?

I can’t really put into words what Rocktown means to me. I hope the fact that I drive past other gyms and get up super early to come to the Rock shows how much I love you guys. I know its a stereotype, but it really is a community.  It’s a group of individuals with similar goals, who all want to succeed and see others succeed as well. The support and energy reciprocated from my fellow athletes is what drives me to push myself daily.

Free Write: (anything you want to say about trainers/facilities/other athletes/etc)

I never considered myself an athlete before crossfit.  I continue to be amazed everyday by what my body is capable of and I have the Rock to thank for that.  The coaches are just fabulous – they are knowledgeable, motivating and always ready to push you to do things you never thought possible. I also think it is incredibly inspiring to workout with a coach and see them suffering through the same thing I am. Overall, the Rock is one of my favorite places to be, my whole day is just a little off when I don’t start it there. And I honestly think the Rock is what made me tolerable to be around during tax season.

A Note from the Rocktown Staff:

Its been an amazing journey to watch Katie grow from the runner she used to be to the athlete she is today.  I can remember Katie’s initial goal of doing one pullup that has not transformed into how many she can do in a row.  Katie’s dedication and commitment to getting better and supporting those around her is something I strive to do myself, she’s a great example of a good athlete/better person.  As Katie mentioned above, she makes the commute every morning from Staunton to attend the 5:45am class…so the next you think to yourself “I don’t feel like it”, Katie is probably drinking coffee and jamming to some FloRida as she makes her way up 81.  In her first two CrossFit competitions Katie has placed 1st (Raleigh Team Superfit) and 2nd (SWVA FitGame) and I’m sure there will be more where those came from.  Congratulations Katie, we look forward to many more white girl dance parties you like to have with yourself during class at The Rock!
