Tell us a little about yourself:
My name is Laken Summerville.  I’m 26 years old and I graduated from JMU with a business degree in 2009.  I currently work for Campus Apartments managing off-campus student housing properties.  Best of all, I am a member of the Rocktown Crossfit coaching team where I get the opportunity to assist in the evolution and progress of our athletes on the daily!

Describe your first crossfit experience and what made you come back?
I was fortunate in sharing my first CrossFit experience with many of Rocktown’s members on opening day.  While the movements in my first CrossFit workout were not unfamiliar to me, the level of intensity WAS.  I had done my fair share of burpees, kettle bell swings, and sit-ups in the past, however performing several rounds of these reps at max effort left me in rare form.  This newfound level of intensity in my fitness training was all the “koolaid” I needed…and I wanted more.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I have been doing crossfit regularly since opening day at The Rock on January 14, 2013.

What is your favorite signature CrossFit workout?
I have shown favoritism to a few different ladies throughout my CrossFit career thus far.  Currently, I would have to say that Karen (150 wall balls for time) is at the top of my list.  She is not always short and rarely ever sweet, but she is simple and to the point.  Maybe I have an inner love for wall balls?

What do you enjoy most when coaching?
I love not only witnessing, but being a part of the moments when athletes discover new limits they didn’t think they were capable of surpassing.  Getting to see people grow stronger with every workout and setting higher fitness goals for themselves is what drives me to lead by example.  I strive to motivate others through my constant journey for improvement while digesting the “humble pie” that Crossfit feeds me every day.

What’s your favorite non-healthy treat?
Cupcakes!…duh.  Honestly, any baked good will do the trick.  I’m also a huge sucker for pasta…but who isn’t?

If someone asked you “What is CrossFit?” how would you explain it to them?
Threshold training with endless programming possibilities and a community of fellow athletes to push you through it.   The optimal combination of constant variation and high intensity that prevents you from acclimating to your workout routine over time.

In your own words, describe Rocktown CrossFit:
Yep the answer is still the same as it was months ago 🙂

Rocktown CrossFit is a prime example of fitness synergy.  Our athletes come together to push each other’s boundaries while providing a support system, yielding a far greater outcome than what any of us could do on our own.  It’s a place where friendly faces are always there to encourage you when trying to attain your newest fitness goals.  I also love that because our gym is new, we have all had the opportunity to grow together as a community and veteran members consistently create a warm welcome for newbies.

Anything else? 3…2…1…
I am so grateful to be a part of the Rocktown coaching team.  The atmosphere created by our members and my fellow coaches pushes me to do what others WON’T today so that I can accomplish what others CAN’T tomorrow.  The personal lessons I gain aid me in motivating others and improving my coaching techniques.  Helping people constantly change for the better is one of the best jobs I could ever ask for.
