Coach: Laura

Laura LeeTell us a little about yourself :
I’m from the good ole Shenandoah County. I grew up in a small town with no stop lights and where everyone knows everyone & all their business….sounds a little like a country song! I didn’t play sports in high school. My activities consisted of being in the band & marching band, helping the boys varsity soccer coach and hanging out with my friends. I was the Homecoming Queen and Drum Major my senior year. After high school I worked two part time jobs, went to LFCC full time and lived on my own in a tiny one-bedroom apartment with the worlds smallest closet. I met my husband, Wayne, in 2005 and was hooked after our first date! When he ran to the car to open the door for me so I wouldn’t get drenched from the rainstorm hovering, my heart melted. We married a year & half later. We have two Labrador retriever, Logan & Wyatt, that only retrieve treats and socks. My stepson, Brady, is one of my motivations in life. He is the sweetest, kindest kid I know.

A few years after marriage, I started my workout path. Rumor is love makes you a little chunky?! So, I joined a MMA gym and starting taking kickboxing. Later, after lots of convincing from fellow athletes and my determined hubby, I tried Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I really enjoyed BJJ, but the commute from Harrisonburg to Winchester 3-4 times a week was taking its toll. Two years later I decided to find something closer to work. Since I work in Harrisonburg I found a CF gym and joined.

Describe your first CrossFit experience?
One word…ouch!

Dead of summer…probably the hottest day of the year…it was a Friday evening. I rolled into a warehouse type garage that was rough, dirty and I loved every inch. It was me, two other muscle-mania sweaty guys, and the coach. The WOD was posted on the whiteboard. We “warmed up”….well, let me rephrase that, since we were already “warm”, we jogged a couple hundred meters, did some pushups, bodyweight exercises  and stretched, before jumping feet first  into a heavy, short, but sweet workout. I believe it consisted of 4 rounds for time of heavy front squats, burpees and pull-ups. I wanted to die. But then I wanted to cry. And then I was like “Hells Yeah”, I just survived my first CrossFit Workout! On my 40 minute drive home I continued to sweat. I blasted some “hardcore” music and grinned from ear to ear. I was so proud of myself! A week later, after my body healed, I headed to the gym, signed up for 6 months and never looked back.

What made you come back?
The way my heart felt when I was finished. Even though I had just kicked my own ass, and I was sore from my fingers to my knees, to my butt, and my toes; I ignored those pains, and was driven to join because of the pride I felt. It’s a crazy love-hate addiction that I have only felt with CrossFit. I found myself in CrossFit. I discovered that I  AM strong. That I can push myself and I can reach goals that I set for myself.  I never had this experience and I loved it, and still do. I’m in LOVE with CrossFit.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?
Since September 2011

What is your favorite signature CrossFit workout?
I love Helen. (3 rounds for time, 400 m run, 21 KBS, 12 Pull-ups)

Even though there is running involved…and everyone knows I hate running, well if you didn’t  know, now you do…anyways, Helen also has kettlebell swings which are my favorite move, and pull-ups. This workout only has three rounds and the reps are low ,  so it’s perfect! 🙂

What do you enjoy most when coaching CrossFit?
My favorite part of coaching is seeing results in people. Being there for the PR’s and for the weight loss or gains. Seeing the changes in peoples skills and strengths, and of course in their confidence, and the sexy bodies are always a plus! When people feel good about themselves you can feel the energy and the positive vibes and I just love that! When I walk into the gym these vibes are so strong and just puts a smile on my face.

Whats your favorite non-paleo treat?
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Italian Touch Pizza and Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream =)

If someone asked you “What is CrossFit?” what would you tell them?
CrossFit is fitness, health, goals, community, challenges, competition  and friendships. It’s most definitely more than just a gym or just a workout. Everyday there is something different to try and something different to learn. It’s an evolving circle of movements and challenges for any individual that clings to it.

In your own words, describe Rocktown CrossFit:
Rocktown is my second home. It’s a place that I go to kick my own butt and help others kick theirs.

Anything else? 3…2…1…
First, thanks to my husband, Wayne, for encouraging me and being by my side, always.

Second, I want to give a SHOUT OUT to my ladies Sarah Whit and Miss Mandi Dandi. Without their help and push during my 2 year Crossfit journey, I probably wouldn’t be able to have the confidence to snatch or do the ‘downward dog” 🙂

Third, I want to say THANK YOU to Nate Dawg  and Lauren for allowing me the opportunity to coach at Rocktown and for pushing me to another level!

Now….3,2,1…go….kick some booty 🙂
