Nate Black – Owner

Nate BlackTell us a little about yourself

I’m a native of Bath County, VA and graduated with my BS in Information Systems Management from Bridgewater College in 2006.  From 8am to 5pm I’m an IT nerd at James Madison University and during the fall I referee High School and ODAC/USA South football.  I’m about as competitive as they come and I’ve been involved with sports as long as I can remember.

Describe your first crossfit experience?

Fight Gone Bad.  I don’t remember a lot but I’m pretty sure I crawled to my car, was sore for a week.  The next real experience was with Lauren and Pistols…again, 7 full days to recover.  Looking back it probably wasn’t the smartest for me to do that workout to its entirety but I just kept telling myself the next time it has to suck less!

What made you come back?

It’s an endless cycle; there are so many things to improve on.  I wanted to be good at all of them, so until then (which will be never) I plan on sticking to it.

How long have you been doing crossfit?

September 2011 we started doing our version of Crossfit in a Gold’s Gym classroom, I’ll never forget some of the looks we would get as we were sprinting around the track.

What is your favorite signature crossfit workout?

Helen or Amanda

What do you enjoy most when coaching?

There are so many rewards to coaching.  The obvious ones are seeing people to things they didn’t realize they could do…or lifting weight they never thought they could lift.  The first pullup/muscle up are my two favorites though.  I love seeing the relationships that have taken place at The Rock…whether it is professional, or social, people who were strangers January 13th, 2013 are now friends.

What’s your favorite non-healthy treat?

Snickers Ice Cream Bars, Pizza, Cheese Fries (I have a problem)

If someone asked you “what is crossfit?” how would you explain it to them?

Well, it definitely wouldn’t include the words wod or amrap J  I’d tell them it’s one of the best things that ever happened to me.  It’s a great reflection of life…those who come in and work hard with integrity and stay humble are most likely to carry that with them outside of the gym…and if they can get that from us then we are doing the right things.

In your own words, describe Rocktown Crossfit

Home.  It’s been better than I ever imagined it would.  When Lauren and I shared our vision with a few friends in the fall of 2012 we weren’t sure exactly what would take shape.  But our athletes have embraced our model and make The Rock something greater than anything I’ve ever been a part of.  I’m truly thankful for every person that walks through those doors day in and day out, our coaches and the community we have established.  Oh and you get in pretty good shape while you’re at it too.

Anything else? 3…2…1… (free space, say whatever you want)

If you are ever having a bad day…come by the Rock during a lunch hour when the Johnson family is working out (Rick, Christine, Jake, and Tanner).  They are the most uplifting group of people I’ve ever been around.  To see the joy in their faces to be spending time together and exercising is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen, and I’m blessed to be able to see it on a regular basis.
