Tell us about yourself (name, age, education, family, work, etc.)

My name is Liya Shumeyko and I’m 32 years old. I graduated from Harrisonburg High School in ‘00 and from BRCC in ’03 in Networking Technology. The first ten years of my life I lived in Russia and in ’92 my parents move to US and we lived in Massachusetts then in ’93 we moved to Virginia. I’m married to a wonderful husband Alek and we have two kids Eric and Rubin. I love to hike, snowboard and wakeboard. I work for Rockingham County Public Schools as a Computer Resource Specialist, keeping the technology up to date.

How long have you been doing crossfit?

I started crossfit last February. I’ve heard a lot about it from a wonderful person Twila Showalter who had encouraged me to just try it for a month and see how I would like it so I did and I love it 🙂

When/what was your “crossfit moment” or have you had one? (the one where you think you may actually die)

I think it was the end of my second month at the rock, we had conditioning 2k rowing and every minute on the minute burpees. I really thought I wasn’t going to make it but a 5:45am class cheered me on to the end 🙂

What are you favorite crossfit movements?

I’m not close to being perfect on any movements but I like box jump overs and power cleans.

What movement makes you look at the white board and want to walk back out the door?

Burpees and running, it was Val’s birthday workout that included 100 burpees so I freaked out and didn’t show up to 5:45 class. That whole day I just couldn’t believe that I’d chickened out, so I decided to come in that afternoon. From that point on I never look at the workouts.

What are your goals?

To be able to do Double Unders consistently and kipping pull-ups.

What motivates you to continue coming back?

I love the way it makes me feel and it’s fun and the people at the rock are amazing. My life style has changed a lot and it’s awesome.

What’s your favorite cheat meal?

I love love sweets, any kind of sweets especially chocolate.

In your own word what is Rocktown Crossfit?

I remember during bootcamp class Twila would say something like, “I’m just getting you prepared for crossfit”, and at that time I really had no idea what it was and how it’s going to work out for me. Well this year has been amazing the people at the Rock are fun to workout with and I can’t say enough about all the wonderful coaches at the Rock and how helpful and supportive they are. I can’t imaging my life with out the Rock, it has totally changed the concept of exercise for me. I look forward to every 5:45am class even thou it’s early but I like it 🙂

A Note from the Rocktown Staff:

Lyia!  Even though everyone probably spells your name differently please know that we all love you equally 🙂  It’s been great to see you grow as an athlete and your never quit attitude is something many could learn from.  I’ve never seen you think twice when jumping into something and its refreshing to see someone so eager to learn.  Lyia is signed up for her first competition in February (Superfit East Coast Championships) and I speak for all the coaches when I say we are excited for you to show off how good at our sport you have become.  Along with being a hard nosed athlete its been great to see your interaction with others and the example you set for your children.  Lyia’s son just finished crossfit kids and its not hard to tell where they get there athletic ability from! (We all know its from you and not Alek 🙂 ).  Thank you for making Rocktown your home and I’m sure Twilia will be proud of your accomplishments…we are happy she prepared you and so thankful she sent you our way!
