July Athlete of the Month: Lueth Akuak

July 2013: The Gentle Giant

Slaying heavy deadlifts….smiling at the ladies…all in a days work!

Meeth Lueth!

Tell us about yourself (name, age, education, family, work, etc.)

My name is Lueth Akuak.  I’m 25 years old and will be graduating from JMU this spring with a degree in Political Science.  I have two older siblings.  My brother Reec resides in Alexandria and my sister Akuany resides in PA with my brother-in-law Kwai.

How long have you been doing crossfit?

In 2011, a box by my home in Alexandria opened.  After contemplating for months, I finally signed up for a free trial session.  After the second day I never returned.  However, after hibernating for two years, I finally came out and joined the Rock on a cold January evening (January 17, 2013 to be exact)

When/what was your “crossfit moment” or have you had one? (the one where you think you may actually die)

I would have to say Renee Whitmore’s Athlete of the Month workout made me contemplate whether I should pretend to faint or fake an injury; just being honest.  Thankfully, with the encouragement of the team and Happy Gilmore, I was able to block out the pain and find my “happy place.”

What are your favorite crossfit movements?

My favorite crossfit movements include rowing, thrusters, and hang cleans.  If the WO…I mean Workout of the Day include any of these movements, I know I’m in for a treat!

What movement makes you look at the white board and want to walk back out the door?

What are your goals?

Muscle ups, HSPU’s, and pistols are not friendly when you’re built like a Great Dane.  I plan to continue to scale accordingly and work my way up the progression ladder.

What motivates you to continue coming back?

Crossfit has dramatically enhanced my quality of life.  If it weren’t for the dedicated staff and the unbelievable support of my fellow crossfit family, I would be devouring a box of Oreo’s every night.  I have never looked so forward to working out with a bunch of dedicated, hardworking, and compassionate individuals.  It is truly something special.

In your own words what is Rocktown Crossfit?

Rocktown Crossfit is a new lease on life.

Though I love each and every member at the rock, gotta give a shout out to my 5:15 peeps!

A note from the Rocktown Staff:

LUUUUUUUUUE!  Congrats on you accomplishment.  You are always a pleasure to have in class and very uplifting to others.  You have a great work ethic, a good heart and you’re pretty damn strong too.  Thank you for being a great ambassador of Rocktown CrossFit and we look forward to seeing much more progress.  For those they don’t know Lue has lost (maybe more) close to 40lbs since starting crossfit, all while maintaining excellent strength.  Lue, you’re a class act and we are damn lucky to have ya!
