June Athlete of the Month – Laken Summerville

Athlete of the Month

June 2013: The Beast

Whether its a workout or eating cupcakes….better believe she will be in beast mode!

Meet Lalaken - June AotMken!

Tell us about yourself (name, age, education, family, work, etc.)

My name is Laken Summerville.  I’m 25 years old and I graduated from JMU with a business degree in 2009.  I currently work for Campus Apartments managing off-campus student housing properties.

How long have you been doing crossfit?.

I have been doing crossfit since the opening day at The Rock (almost 6 months).

When/what was your “crossfit moment” or have you had one? (the one where you think you may actually die)

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing my “crossfit moment” in my first Superfit competition at Crossfit 757.  The final workout was a 15 MINUTE AMRAP of 25 double unders, 15 wall balls, and 5 front squats and it was by far the longest 15 minutes of my life!  Every time I looked up at the clock I was disheartened at how much time was still remaining.  My body was exhausted from the 3 workouts completed earlier in the day and I thought my heart would explode because I couldn’t control my breathing.  But when the 15 minutes were over, my heart didn’t explode, I didn’t die, and I came out 2nd overall in my division.  At the end of the day, I learned valuable lessons in that 15 minutes about what I was capable of and what I needed to improve on

What are your favorite crossfit movements?

My favorite crossfit movements would be burpee chest to bar pullups, box jumps, and kettlebell swings because I can challenge myself while keeping my heart rate up.  I also have a love-hate relationship with snatches because they are such an efficient move and I am constantly trying to improve my technique.

What movement makes you look at the white board and want to walk back out the door?

The movement that makes me want to turn around and take a rest day is double unders.  Even though I have come a long way with them, nothing fatigues me like double unders in a workout.

What are your goals?

Some of my current goals are to find my kip again (because I apparently lost it somewhere along the way?), improve on my olympic lifting technique (aka drop under the barbell), and increase my overall endurance.

What motivates you to continue coming back?

Everything about Rocktown Crossfit keeps me coming back!  My fellow crossfit athletes, the coaches, the positive atmosphere, and the results.  I have made constant improvements over the past 6 months and knowing that I will only get better with time is addicting.  I feel so fortunate to find something that I am truly passionate about.  I love discovering new capabilities in myself and watching my peers do the same.

In your own words what is Rocktown Crossfit?

Rocktown Crossfit is synergy at its finest.  A group of people coming together to push each other’s boundaries while providing a support system yields a far greater outcome than anything any of us could do in the world of fitness on our own.  It’s a place where friendly faces are always there to encourage you when trying to attain goals that other people would probably deem unrealistic or crazy.  I also love that because our gym is new, we have all had the opportunity to grow together as a community.  I don’t think that I would get that feeling at just any crossfit gym 🙂

Free Write: (anything you want to say about trainers/facilities/other athletes/etc)

Overall, I’m a crossfit addict and I have Rocktown Crossfit to thank for it.  I enjoy my time there every day no matter what time I’m working out.  The coaches/trainers are always helpful when I need assistance and provide knowledge and positive reinforcement.  I honestly have a hard time taking enough rest days because I find myself not wanting to miss out on the workout of the day.  I am very proud to be a member of Rocktown Crossfit.

A Note from the Rocktown Staff:

Its been a pleasure getting to know you more over the past few months at The Rock.  Even though we can’t speak the secret language that you have with B it is fun to try!  You continue to get better on a daily basis and your continued support of others is as good as it gets.  The true heart of what we do is striving to improve while making those around us better and there is no doubt this is exactly what you stand for.  It’s only been 6 months but the sky is the limit for your progress in the sport of CrossFit.  You are a fierce competitor but at the end of the day you show what it means to be humble, a trait that is imperative to someone with your skill.  We also appreciate your love of the Cupcake Company, you’re appearance/performance shows that you can work hard but enjoy life as well.  Thank you for being a great ambassador to Rocktown CrossFit and we look forward to what the future hold for you!
