October 2016: The California Kid

A mix of west coast style and a strong work ethic make for a great athlete of the Month

Tell us about yourself (name, age, education, family, work, etc.) 

what up Rock family?! Jen here aka J Carter or Jen Soda. I’m 28 and was brought to the Burg and the Rock by my awesome husband Jake who imported me from California 5 years ago. Went to THE U of A (Beardown) and now work in marketing and am most recently the co-creator of Sub Rosa Supper Club. Shameless plug: check us out subrosasupperclub.com. We’re a good time. I love food and love to travel but always fear coming back to the rock after long spans of time away. I am also staying away from the drinking fountain for as long as possible 😜 and am always down for a beer and a ball game. So hit me up!

How long have you been doing crossfit?

A little over two years. Just hit my anniversary in September.

When/what was your “crossfit moment” or have you had one? (the one where you think you may actually die)

Luckily I have really only had one I can recall where I almost quit midway through the workout. I did the conditioning during strength which was the devil incarnate sled pushes. I was gassed then went on to the workout with basically 30 seconds to recover. Laken looked quite concerned but I pulled through. Oh and every time I come back from a long vacation it’s rough but as I continue I seem to be able to get back in the groove quicker.  I think I’ve only puked twice and once was my first day of PEAK. Yippee!

What are your favorite crossfit movements?

Loading up the bar thinking I’ll take off weight halfway through the workout and I make it through no problem. Hitting my split jerk PR, doing Murph for the first time, recently graduating off all bands for pull ups and generally just starting my day at The Rock. It’s the best part of my day.

What movement makes you look at the white board and want to walk back out the door?

Thrusters. Wall balls. Rowing.

What are your goals?

Double unders and hand stand push ups….and to sign up for this year’s CrossFit Open!

What motivates you to continue coming back?

The way it makes me feel, how it enables me to eat what I want 🙊 within moderation, it is something that I get to share with my husband and the fact that I have met so many awesome people that I consider my friends. It’s a fantastic community that champion each other to doing the best that they can and constantly push to grow.

What’s your favorite cheat meal?

Love ice cream, especially when Jake makes it. Also can’t function without my daily coffee. I try to eat relatively clean but I’ve never met a twix I didn’t like.

In your own words what is Rocktown Crossfit?

A great place to sweat your ass off, socialize with people I am in awe of everyday, and feel good about the work you put in and the results it brings. It’s a great place to start your every day.

Frankly, I’m in love. It’s the best workout I’ve ever had. I am amazed at what I am capable of doing and that hard work does pay off ten fold. I’m in love with all the people and the coaches. They truly care and engage, working with you to meet your goals. I have heard “things” about the other gyms in town but my loyalty will always be to The Rock.

A Note from the Rocktown Staff:

From the quiet girl at 6:45am who often appeared to still be asleep as she warmed up (occasionally still does) to Athlete of the Month!  The evolution of this bearcat has not happened overnight and I’m sure she would be the first to tell you that it takes consistency and hard work to get anywhere, be it the gym or in life.  Jen has been a staple to the 6:45am class since day 1 and even though some of her early partner workouts with her then boyfriend were a little tense she managed to tame him and the rest of us and we couldn’t imagine The Rock without her!  As hard as Jen has worked at The Rock getting to know her has been equally as great.  Her and Jake are very selfless people and are always looking for ways to help others…as Lauren calls it, “she’s a good soul”.  Jen, thank you for making Rocktown CrossFit your home, thanks for talking baseball with Nate and sharing your west coast roots with all of this…its safe to say we are the lucky ones!
