Rex Elsea- February 2014 Athlete of the Month

February 2014: The Tyrannosaurus

Given his flavor of CrossFit movements, you could argue that Squatosaurus may be more appropriate!

rex aotmMeet Rex!

Tell us about yourself (name, age, education, family, work, etc.)

My name is not Rex Elsea. I was born Henry Elsea, III but 30 years ago my parents lacked all imagination and named me for my father, named for his father. I went to Bridgewater all those years ago with Nate and now work at JMU deep in the bowels of the IT department. Most of you know my peerless wife Julie and the light of my life that is the Gymbaby: Hannah “Nanners”.

How long have you been doing crossfit?

I’m a Rocktown OG! I started January of 2013, and been doing “CrossFit” since then. Before that I don’t think I’d ever put my hands on a barbell.

When/what was your “crossfit moment” or have you had one? (the one where you think you may actually die)

The first thing that came to mind was the resounding defeat of Team T-Rex in Round Three of the 2013 Superfit Championships. Trevor and I both knew that those 120 double unders were going to be murder, and picking up that jump rope was like walking to the gallows. It was a slaughter, but even as the clock wound down, and everyone else was long finished, the spectators, even our competitors, were clapping and cheering because they all had been there. They all knew exactly what we were feeling… and no one wanted us to give up.

What are your favorite crossfit movements?

I love me some Squats! Back Squat, Front Squat, whatever.

What movement makes you look at the white board and want to walk back out the door?
<expletive deleted> Double <expletive deleted> Unders.

What are your goals?

I have specific goals that are constantly shifting. But lately I’ve really been trying to be better at the things I suck at. Things that require you to have some skill and finesse rather than just Hulking out. Double unders, toes to bar, etc.

What motivates you to continue coming back?
Not to be all trite and “cult-y” but “Better Than Yesterday” keeps me darkening Rocktown’s door. I wrote this on a forum I use to track my progress: “…I noticed that I was standing at the precipice of my 30’s. … Time to kill Fat Rex. Time to strangle that pudgy bastard once and for all.” And every day Fat Rex fights back a little less. But the tricksy thing about Fat Rex: he’s always there. Laying in wait. Always waiting for me to say:
“Well, that’s good enough,” or
“I think I’ll skip today.” or for me to say
“I can’t.”

Well the only thing I can’t is let Fat Rex win.

What’s your favorite cheat meal?

Man, I tell you what. I’m a sucker for some pizza.

In your own words what is Rocktown Crossfit?
Rocktown Crossfit is, no joke, my family. You guys have heard “Blood is thicker than water”? The whole quote is “The blood of battle is thicker than the water of birth.” I have bled with you. I have laughed with you and I have cried with you. I have been pushed and harangued and carried and driven by you. I have won with you and I have failed with you. All of you. If that’s not family, I don’t know what is.

Free Write: (anything you want to say about trainers/facilities/other athletes/etc)

First, I want to shout to my Nooners: Sherry, Jamie, Becky, & Trevor. Your friendship means a ton to me.

Second, to all my rabbits…keep crushin it.

Third, thanks to Nate for being my guide, to Lauren and Sarah for never cutting me any slack, to Laura for always having a kind word, to Laken for being an inspiration and to Dana for all the support she’s given.

Finally, thank you Julie for being awesome. I am who I am because of you.

A Note from the Rocktown Staff:

Ah Rex, how far you have come from the early days of 6:15pm with big poppa.  We can remember the first day you could barely peel yourself off the floor from a burpee and just weeks ago you nearly did 100 in 7 minutes.  I can remember when 3 days turned to 4 and 5, when you pr’d your deadlift by close to 100lbs and when the 185lb clean and jerk was on the goal board.  All those feel like ages ago and it’s safe to say “fat rex” is dead.  You’ve been a great supporter of the rock and a great role model.  When Julie and Hannah watch you compete the amount of pride in their eyes is overwhelming, your family and all those around should be very proud…not only because you’ve changed who you are but because of the example you set for your family.  Stay on that jump rope and keep kicking those toes up to that bar….Rome wasn’t built in a day and the T Rex arms aren’t getting any longer!

And if you’re ever unsure, ask yourself WWDKD?

(you’ll have to ask Rex what that is if you don’t know)
